Rosemary's first space journey just happens to coincide with the Wayfarer's Big Break--an opportunity to build the first bridge the multi-species Galactic Commons (GC) and an enigmatic (and possibly very angry) alien race that dwells near the galactic core.

The moment I realised I was in love with this book came very quickly after starting it. The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet opens in a highly familiar manner, with a cast of mistmatched characters living together on a spacecraft being established. There are so many undiscovered REAL talents. Welcome back. The story follows the crew of a tunneling ship as it embarks on a long-haul journey to create a new wormhole in a previously disputed, and still dangerous, area of space. But all of the crew of the Wayfarer have their secrets and their demons. A pre-teen on Prozac would have written better. That description isn’t often likely to refer to a science fiction novel, but it’s to Becky Chambers’ great credit that it works all the better because it’s a science fiction novel, allowing her to delve deeply into questions of autonomy, consciousness, culturaA beautifully compassionate, intimate portrait of the inner lives of a small group of keenly-drawn characters as they navigate their way through their lives and find a way to connect and survive and thrive even after trauma and heartbreak.
Ms. Chambers’ influences are easily discernible (Star Trek TNG, Farscape), but to an extent where I felt like I was reading a teleplay for a single TV episode. Does it again and again and again.

I read a lot of sci - fi and 99% of is written by male writers, don't get me wrong, its very good, but what men don't seem so good at is understanding the subtle emotions as they are detailed and explored in this story. Try the Ishmael Wang books they begin with Quarter Share by Nathan Lowell. That is, until the crew is offered the job of a lifetime: tunneling wormholes through space to a distant planet. And if you’re at the top, then people who aren’t like you...well, they’ve got to be somewhere lower, right?
