Class of 2020, I am sure you can agree, it is difficult to learn at home when you are used to enjoying the learning environment your school provides. These last three months, it feels like we should have failed. With no real warning, one day we are just leaving school on a Friday for a well-deserved weekend. Education was not something that was prioritized for a lot of females.

Class of 2020, while this isn’t in 100 years how we imagined the ending of our high school career and ultimately graduation, here we are, about to close the first chapter of our lives and enter into the next most challenging and rewarding chapter: life after high school. We have explored the possibility of holding these events on campus in an effort to bring the senior class home to provide closure to this school year. As I look back on this four-year-long, wonderful journey we call high school, I find myself constantly reflecting on my first day of freshman year when I entered my school building at August Martin as a young girl who felt clueless and already stressed because, honestly, I never wanted to study. It is difficult when you have don’t have your teacher physically around you to lean on when needed. It also didn’t hurt to have the love and compassion of my principals, teachers and the support of my friends. It is difficult when there are multiple members in your family that need to log on for school but there is only one computer, when you need to be the sole provider for your family and care for family members who are sick with COVID-19.
Many of you parents reached out to us with thoughtful suggestions for consideration. All of the odds were stacked against us, but nevertheless we rose to the occasion. The next thing you know, all school buildings across New York City are closed for the remainder of the year. Everyone in attendance at both events must wear a face covering in order to enter the church.You will receive more specific logistical information regarding both events from Ms. Kelly Wild, Assistant Principal for Student Services, on Monday, July 27.The leadership, administration, faculty, and staff at Brother Martin have worked tirelessly in an effort to give this senior class and its parents all that they deserve with these two special rites of passage as graduates of Brother Martin High School and partners in our shared mission.
